Internet Workshop with Vacation Under the Volcano
Pompeii
B. Workshop notes:
AS A STUDENT:
-Two new ideas about Pompeii:
1. The volcano, Mount Vesuvius that destroyed Pompeii also destroyed the city, Herculaneum at the same time.
2. Seventeen years before Mount Vesuvius’ eruption, Pompeii was destroyed by an earthquake and then rebuilt.
-One tip about navigating websites:
All of the sites are very informative, it is important to click and read everything. Whenever you see an underlined word on awesomestories.com’s page, make sure you double click it. Once you click it, a new page will open showing a picture of what they are talking about. For example, when Pompeii is underlined and you click it you will see a map of Pompeii. I think this is very helpful and good to know when navigating this website because it allows you to actually see what they are talking about.
AS A TEACHER:
-One link & description of useful resources for 4th graders:
I found that the website, Ancient Pompeii on humorwriter.com, was a very good site for 4th graders. The website used bright colors and interesting graphics. It also used questions for headings, which allowed the reader to know what they were reading about. Also, the language on the website was straightforward and right on a 4th grader’s reading level. At the end of the website it listed more kid friendly links, which I thought was a great idea because it gives children the resources to learn more about what they read.

C. Designed Internet Workshop for Grade 4:
Worksheet:
“Perusing Pompeii”
Objectives:
In this Internet Workshop you are going to be learning more about Pompeii, the place Jack and Annie explored in Vacation Under the Volcano. Like Jack and Annie, we will be exploring Pompeii, but we won’t be actually going there, instead we will be exploring Pompeii using the Internet. I have bookmarked the sites I want you to use while exploring Pompeii. Explore the website, to learn more information. Then, I want you to answer the questions below. After you have completed the worksheet, I want you to pick a partner and share what you have learned. Then, we will share as a class what we have learned while exploring Pompeii. Good luck and have fun!
1.On this website it lists every place in Pompeii, if you click on one it will tell you what that place is and something about it. Click on two of the places and tell about it. 2.Now, pick one of the two places and draw a picture of what you think it looked like.
1.What was the name of the Volcano that destroyed Pompeii and when did it erupt? 2.Pompeii was very different before the eruption; give two examples of what Pompeii was like before the volcano erupted?
Evaluation Rubric
20 points-You recorded important information for each item (5 x 4 =20) + 5 points- You shared your new found information with a partner and the class _ /30 points
